Probably the worst prof I've had at Oberlin. Took a lit in translation course and got NOTHING out of it. She is impossible to understand, confusing, never even knows what she is trying to say. She is rigorous but not in a way that improves your work or critical thinking. Just plain terrible. AVOID HER CLASSES AT ALL COSTS.
Don't get me wrong, I love this class, but Arlene Foreman is really crazy. Any of her classes are not for the weak of heart, simply because she is exhausting and sometimes rather inefficient in her teaching style. She is a self proclaimed Soviet Style Instructor and she will grill you endlessly, trick you, and humiliate you.
didn't take a language course with her, but would not recommend her lit-in-translation courses if she is still doing that. aimless, below-par lectures. survey courses that excerpt everything, you end up reading 1 novel by the time your done and a bunch of excerpts from some bunk anthology.
Very hard! She will challenge you, and sometimes she's not all that clear on what she wants from you. I failed this class because I couldn't figure out what my final assignment was supposed to be. However, I do enthusiastically recommend her for her knowledge and fluidity of Russian.
