hi, I am doing biology 12, and I study early in the morning til really late at night all day doing biology and I am only getting a average of 60-70 percent, is biology really that much work, or am I just taking too long? Either way I am lucky Im not taking another course right now.

Charlene,

It sounds like you are studying a lot, but not studying effectively.

I would sit and review your study-skills and habits with the professor or a learning-center on campus; what may have worked for you in the past in other courses may not necessarily work for you in this class.

(In reply to charlenekarras)

How do you hope to make any gains by working at a faster pace? You are right to assume that you have a problem, but it's really difficult for anyone to assess the cause of it from reading your short message.

You need to find out where and why your study technique is falling short - no guesswork either, you have to *know*. You see, if you don't learn how to resolve this well now, then you will be facing some insurmountable challenges in your goal to become a massage therapist.

What's the best way for you to find out? Guessing what's wrong? Fooling around with trying to speed up your studying?? No and no.

Hie thee to the study lab or your learning centre and get a professional to evaluate your study habits.

One positive thing about this is that you have identified the problem early enough in the semester that you can fix it. Many students write about their study problems after they've flunked their year. But, if you don't handle this correctly, you may lose any advantage that you had from being quick to know that you have a problem.

Hey that was a truly helpful and objective reply.
Damn socialist.

Some people can not truly learn material merely by reading it. Have you tried rewriting the info you need to learn? THe technique involves rewriting the info until you can write it without consulting your notes or textbook.

well I can tell you what is stupid of all, first, there wasnt a biology tutor in sight for help at the learning centre until next week, so I have been struggling already for a month on this course at least and second of all my biology teacher is a prick so asking for help from him is a lost cause, that is why Iam asking you people, how sad is it when someone put you in the wrong class, there is no biology tutor in schol and you have a jackass teacher, thats why iam struggling right now, thank god someone was smart and hired a tutor for biology for the rest of my semester, unfortunately this tutor wants to come in and help people at wedneday 4-6pm!! thats when I have to be home to take care of my 3 kids, friday is the only time il have actual help for my course 8am-3pm. but this isnt all my doing, someone put me in the wrong course when I specifically asked for bio 11 and noone thought to put in a freakin biology tutor, when there is a biology course for the semester, god help me. Also my teachers an ass.

What do you mean when you say that you are taking the wrong course? Do you mean that you lack the prerequisites - that you were supposed to take Bio 11 before Bio 12? Have you spoken about this to your academic advisor or the dean of your college? Is this a high school course?

I think that you are stressing out way too much and it's making you sick. You're worried about taking your kids out trick-or-treating, but that's three weeks away, and it's on a Saturday night. Taking your kids out for a few hours is not going to harm your biology grade. Besides, it would likely be a good thing to schedule some time for your family every weekend.

If you don't get behind at first, quite often university courses feel easier as you get into them, so take heart. At the beginning, there is a steep learning curve as you figure out what is expected of you and how best to achieve it. Once you catch on to the professor's teaching style, and learn the vocabulary for your course, things straighten out a bit.

What are you studying about this week? If you could tell us more, perhaps someone here has some helpful thoughts or memory mnemonics.

Here's one for you - Kids Prefer Cheese Over Fried Green Spinach

Mark my words, this mnemonic will be easier for her to remember--in fact, it seems almost custom made for her (and, it's actually true):

On Average, Folks Fart Fourteen Times A Day.

im suppose to be in grade 11 biology, and Iam studying for a midterm, if I dont finish studying for a chapter within 3 days, I will be behind in studying for the midterm, I have 1,2,3,4 and 6 chapters that have to be finished studying for before the 20th of october, which isnt alot of time really. Plus he's ongoing with the next chapters we have for the next midterm now instead of giving us a studying block to do this crap. I figured my teacher out really well, he doesnt care if your in the wrong class, he doesnt have time to help you with questions, he'll brush you off and if your dropping behind too freakin bad. He's the only biology teacher for this course so Im SOL for transfering to another teacher. Its too late to go into biology 11 as well. I just found out im in the wrong class after a month Ive been in this course. All I can say is do the best I can to pass this course and try not to follow blindly.

It's probably just not your thing. I barely even need to study biology cause it's something that comes easily for me, it's like common sense; on the other hand, I find I have to study chemistry for hours b/c it doesn't feel compatible to my natural thinking pattern.

thats the problem though cause I need this course for the job that I want which is massage therapy, and if I decide I just cant do it because it doesnt come naturally, then I cant do massage therapy :S, if I do something that I dont like to do because it just comes naturally that would suck.

Hmmm...pizza stores and biology class...great comparison. Perhaps ditch digging may be more challenging; word on the street is that it pays more than ****8 per hour.

lol more like ditch work altogether and focus on biology thats what Iam doing, Id rather spend 3 hours studying than threee hours standing like an idiot because all the pizzas are made and noones around to buy any. I get birsaries and child tax, so 15-50 bucks aint a big loss. Better to take the time learning than collecting a few bucks more than I need.

thats the way I felt when I got my midterm test mark monday, 57% :S I studied my butt off for two whole weeks even struggling through being sick for this test. Note to self: study little bits at a time before the midterm so Im not in a manic rush to collect information for a test..

lol oh well, Iam happy now though, I have officially quit my pizza job making 8 dollars an hour, Iam either going to get an offer for an interview with the cactus club or extreme pita and if that all doesnt work...Im spending all those hours I could have been studying instead of standing around for hours doing nothing at my job STUDYING BIOLOGY ! I love it and to hell with my job, I love biology

passing biology is going to be the best christmas present ever . Iam finding new quicker efficient ways to study for my tests in biology now, things are starting to ease out as Iam almost finished my course in bio 12. The lab grades and small tests I havent been doing too bad on, those are prob saving my ass right now but midterms are really the only thing knocking me down a little, but with my new studying habits, there going to bring my mark up a little. I still study alot, but testing myself on certain areas after re reading the page over and over again has been alot more better when retaining information. I just recently found out I have a learning disability as well where I cant retain information, but Im not gonna feel sorry for myself and fail, it actually drove me more in the direction of figuring out my study habits anyways, so its a good thing. Thats why I figure I prob did terrible in studying and tests for this class before. I found out most of my class never upgraded before bio 12 either, makes me relazed lol. Anyways one and a half months to go, Im surviving pretty good in class, compared to alot of peeple, some withdrew :S but I managed to stick it through, and Im glad I did :D. One and a half more months and Biology 1099 is actually well worth learning.
