Just out of curiosity, what do you all think about "friending" your professors on Facebook? Ok if you're not in a class they teach? Ok if you are in a class they teach? Never ok?

I'd like to hear the professor point of view too, if there are any still around here.

You only live once, unless you're Shirley Maclaine.

Every time I get a friend request from a student, I track them down and tell them in person that they need to get a life.

I'm actually curious why students would want to Facebook friend their profs?

To answer your question, I won't Facebook friend my students. It doesn't seem appropriate to me.

I have some of my previous profs friended, but I'm old, and see some of them as my peers and future colleagues. I don't send requests to current profs. Some profs have tons of students on their friends list. I was just curious about what people thought about it.

I think it's kind of fun to get friend requests from current and former students. It gives me a chance to get a glimpse of their lives away from the classroom. With former students, it lets me know a bit about how their lives are progressing. I wouldn't expect a prof. to respond to various "invitations" on Facebook, though.

It seems to cross that line of professionalism. I wouldn't do it.

I just recently found out I'm friends with my professors daughter on Facebook and didn't even know it! I didn't add my professor though--it just seemed too weird to me. My thing is that they could see if you complained about them or not (you shouldn't) but I mean if you did...they could see it! That would never be good....So to avoid all that, I just don't add my professors. I did add my teachers in high school though. haha...but to me there is a difference
